The nose, one of the most significant factors in achieving a perfect facial profile, has been recognized as one of the most influential indicators of aesthetic understanding since the dawn of humanity. The nose, which must be in harmony with the facial profile and have a regular structure, is the most important factor in achieving a harmonious appearance. In addition to being one of the important building blocks of aesthetic appearance, the structure and shape of the nose are also considered a factor that directly affects quality of life, such as healthy breathing, snoring, middle ear inflammation, and dry mouth.
The nasal deviation surgery discussed in this article is one of the surgical interventions we perform as a result of conditions such as accidents or genetically disproportionate growth of the nasal bone. With nasal bone deviation surgery, our patients are freed from deformities and have a nose that fully functions for a healthy life.
We can begin sharing all the details about this surgery with you by discussing the causes of nasal cartilage deviation.
What Are the Causes of Nasal Cartilage Bone Curvature?
Many irregularities in bone structure are congenital. In normal individuals, the development of the nasal cartilage bone continues until around the age of 16, and by the end of 16, the cartilage structure of the nose is fully established. Causes such as disproportionate growth that may occur during the growth and maturation process bring about nasal cartilage curvature problems. Nasal bone curvature problems cause not only aesthetic problems but also problems such as regular breathing, sleep problems, and middle ear inflammation. The definitive treatment for nasal curvature problems is only possible with nasal bone correction surgery.
Among the causes of nasal bone curvature, the most common after congenital factors are nasal cartilage bone curvatures caused by traffic accidents or blows to the nose. These types of bone deviations not only distort the structure of the nose but also directly affect breathing. After examining our patients who have bone deviations in their nose following an impact or accident, we evaluate the shape and health of the nose and perform nasal bone deviation surgery (septoplasty) to treat the problem.
Let’s take a closer look at the problems it causes to solve this issue.
What Problems Does a Deviated Septum Cause?
A deviated nasal septum is initially noticeable due to its physical appearance, and the primary issue that arises subsequently is irregular breathing. This irregularity stems from the deviation occurring in the septum and the resulting disruption of the septum’s structure. For more detailed information on nasal bone deviation issues:
Let’s answer the question, “What is the septum, and how does it affect breathing?”
One of the problems that may arise due to this issue is snoring. If you would like to learn more about snoring and how it can be treated, you can visit: https://dresinclinic.com/tr/horlama-tedavisi-nedir/
What is the Septum?
As you know, the nose has a two-channel structure. The septum, which consists of cartilage and bone, divides the nose into two parts. Damage to the septum can be detected by the blockage of one or both nasal passages. “
Yes, we continue with the problems we may encounter due to a deviated nasal septum. Deformities in the septum cause difficulty in breathing, which not only reduces our quality of life but also directly affects the quality of our sleep because we cannot breathe comfortably while sleeping. Due to the difficulty in breathing, irritation in the throat is also frequently seen.
In addition, due to nasal breathing difficulties caused by a deviated septum, mouth breathing may lead to bad breath problems. Another discomfort caused by constant mouth breathing is dry mouth problems.
The amount of air inhaled is more regular and equal in healthy individuals than in patients with a deviated nasal septum. If regular and equal breathing is not maintained, lung and respiratory problems are inevitable.
Aesthetic problems caused by a deviated septum
Visual impairment also occurs due to a deviated septum. A nose that is not in harmony with the face and has a structural defect causes unpleasant images to appear on the person’s face.
Middle ear infections, eye pain of varying severity, and problems in the sinus passages also occur as a result of a deviated nasal bone.
Nasal Bone Surgery
Nasal bone surgeries are performed using closed surgical intervention. The surgery lasts approximately 1 hour, depending on the problems with the nasal bone. After anesthesia is administered, the surgery is performed with the aim of achieving a healthy and more aesthetic nose by repairing or removing the bone causing the curvature and completing the aesthetic procedures.
After Nose Bone Surgery
Although we want our patients to experience the post–nasal bone surgery period with minimal issues thanks to the advancements in medical technology, there are still some important points to pay attention to, as nasal bone surgery is ultimately a surgical procedure.
To minimize swelling after the surgery, we prefer applying ice. We do not recommend that our patients eat or drink anything within the first 6 hours following the operation; after 6 hours, they may drink water and, if there is no nausea, they can start eating. Due to the large number of capillaries in the nasal area, mild bleeding may occur after the surgery. If the bleeding is not mild but instead strong and continuous, we intervene immediately. If patients experience such bleeding at home after being discharged, they must contact us directly.
A shower can be taken the day after the surgery, as long as it is kept short. If only the hair will be washed, we recommend washing it by tilting the head backward, similar to how it is done at a hairdresser.
In some cases, we provide medication to help reduce post–operative swelling more quickly. Our patients may also consume foods that help reduce swelling, such as green tea and parsley.
For two months following the surgery, glasses should not be worn, and heavy sports activities should be avoided for about one month. You may continue brushing your teeth as usual, but we recommend using softer toothbrushes.
